The Chilean Spring
Cristián, a young photographer, was executed in the aftermath of the Chilean coup of 1973. Based on his journal, this extraordinary fictionalized diary brings us inside the mind of a turbulent nation not unlike our own. In subtle and compelling prose, Alegría shows us Chile torn by the irreparable anguish of a civil war. Cristián arrives in Santiago from America at the climactic moment just prior to the outbreak of hostilities. He is reluctantly brought deeper and deeper into the underground resistance to the Junta, until at the time of his death his example makes a profound impact on the lives of those around him.
