The Storefront

A Community of Children on 129th Street and Madison Avenue

The Children’s Storefront is an independent school in Harlem, founded in 1966 by the poet Ned O’Gorman. It was the subject of a 1988 documentary film, The Children’s Storefront, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short. This book features snippets of observations, conversations, and the life experiences of O’Gorman and his young students. It’s a unique window into a fascinating time. Includes a line drawing of the school by Parker Bloser, along with several black-and-white photographs.
