Desire Under the Elms, in which O’Neill first revealed his full maturity and addressed himself to the eternal tragic problem of man which was to be his main concern as artist and thinker; the experimental and ambitious two-part play Strange Interlude, in which he found a technique for probing the unexpressed and inexpressible thoughts and feelings of his characters; and the trilogy Mourning Becomes Electra, consisting of 3 plays: Homecoming, The Hunted and The Haunted — in which he paralleled the structure of Aeschylus’ Oresteia in the tragedy of New England.
