Windows protect us. But windows are vulnerable, too; a well-aimed rock can shatter one in an instant.

In this wide-ranging history, we learn not only about how windows were developed and refined through the centuries; but the role windows have played in many dramatic events, from castle sieges to the infamous Kristallnacht of Nazi Germany to the riots that occurred in many American cities during the 1960s.
