Best friends since they hit the books together in college, Bread on Arrival owners Molly Ferris, Carol MacCallan, and Laura Donovan all turned to a new page in their lives when they opened their Scottish bakehouse in Loch Mallaig, Michigan. Now firmly rooted in the quaint village, the Bakehouse Three learn that another newcomer is starting a fresh chapter in town, and they rush to patronize the recently opened used bookshop of retired Detroit police detective Edgar Richardson.

Unfortunately, Edgar is discovered dead under suspicious circumstances after his shop is burglarized, and the police inform Molly and Carol that they were the last customers to see the kindly retiree alive. In the wake of his untimely demise, Edgar seemingly leaves behind more secrets than old books and kitschy curios—and the attack on Books & Bargains appears to be only the first in a series of frightening break-ins plaguing Loch Mallaig.

Determined to stop the crime spree before anyone else gets hurt, Molly uses every trick in the book to track down the real villain—despite being distracted by increasing romantic tension with handsome resort owner Fergus MacGregor.
